GLOOn November 18, 2023, VIA Rail is set to launch its revamped VIA Rail Preference program after several delays. Originally scheduled for March 2023, the launch was deferred multiple times, but the rail operator has now confirmed the official date. The program changes were first announced in January 2023, featuring expanded points earning opportunities, dynamic reward pricing, and the inclusion of taxes and fees on reward tickets.
The revamped program will maintain existing points earning rates on tickets and travel passes, with additional points opportunities for eligible fees and optional products. The major change lies in the redemption process, moving from a fixed points rewards chart to a dynamic points redemption model. The number of points required for a reward trip will be based on the cash fare at the time of booking, similar to airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Members can book tickets before November 18, and if the travel requires fewer points after the launch, they can cancel and rebook without incurring additional charges. The refund and exchange conditions will follow the rules applicable at the time of booking, offering flexibility to travelers.
Starting November 18, 2023, points redemptions will also be subject to the same refund and exchange conditions as the paid fare that was redeemed for, aligning the rules for both types of transactions. Additionally, the program will introduce taxes and fees on products purchased with VIA Préférence points, with the possibility of a temporary 30% reduction in points redemptions to cover these additional costs.
The revamped program will expand redemption options beyond tickets, allowing members to redeem points for travel passes, fare upgrades, and eligible optional products and fees. Points transfers between members will be free, with a limit of five transfers per year.
The elite status levels of Préférence, Privilège, and Premier will be retained, with no changes to the qualifying dollar spend requirements. Notably, the requirement for segments to reach Premier status will be removed, potentially making it easier to achieve. Elite status benefits will now be granted immediately upon qualification, eliminating the wait until the following year.
