United Airlines and the Chicago Bears recently joined forces at O’Hare International Airport to support and promote the Special Olympics. Since 2019, United has been running the Special Olympics Service Ambassador (SOSA) program, which employs Special Olympics athletes as part-time airport staff. These athletes help welcome United customers, locate check-in kiosks, navigate TSA pre-check lines, find luggage drop-off points, and perform Agent on Demand duties. Currently, there are 18 SOSA employees in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Houston, and Denver, with plans to expand to San Francisco and Los Angeles later this year.
United has also supported various Special Olympics events, including Plane Pull® competitions, the Special Olympics World Games, and other local and international volunteer activities. In 2023, 4,000 athletes, coaches, and staff from the organization traveled across North America for sports competitions, educational development, and leadership events. United has facilitated these efforts through its Miles on a Mission program, which encourages MileagePlus® loyalty members to donate their unused miles. To date, United has contributed over $8.5 million in cash and travel miles to support Special Olympics athletes.
For eight consecutive years, United Airlines has been recognized as a Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion, earning high scores on the Disability Equality Index. The airline’s other initiatives include improvements for wheelchair users, the addition of Braille in aircraft interiors, a redesigned mobile app for visually impaired users, and accessible inflight entertainment options.
“Employing Special Olympics Service Ambassadors is truly a gift to both our United team and our customers in airports,” said Omar Idris, Vice President of United Airlines at the Chicago O’Hare Hub. “Through the SOSA program and business resource groups like Bridge for people of all abilities, United Airlines strives to create an inclusive and dynamic workplace environment.”
