Tripadvisor has launched Tripadvisor Rewards, a free in-app loyalty program offering travelers 5% back in Trip Cash on eligible hotel and experience bookings, plus bonus earnings for reviews and community engagement. The program aims to make Tripadvisor the go-to starting point for trip planning while rewarding travelers for both booking and contributing.

Tripadvisor has officially launched Tripadvisor Rewards, a free, app-only loyalty program in the United States that allows travelers to earn and redeem “Trip Cash” on future bookings through the Tripadvisor mobile app. This initiative reflects the company’s aim to strengthen habitual relationships with its audience by rewarding travelers across all stages of trip planning.

How It Works — Simple, Valuable, and Inclusive

  • Earn 5% Back in Trip Cash: Members receive 5% of eligible hotel and experience bookings back as Trip Cash, which works like real currency within the app—1 Trip Cash equals $1 in discounts on future app bookings.

  • Flexible Redemption: Trip Cash can be used in any amount on subsequent bookings, with no blackout dates, tiers, or complicated rules to navigate.

  • Bonus Earnings for Engagement: Beyond bookings, users can earn extra Trip Cash for contributing to the community—by writing reviews, adding travel tips, uploading photos, joining challenges, or participating in interactive “surprise and delight” moments.

  • Automatic Enrollment & Launch Bonus: Existing Tripadvisor users are automatically enrolled; simply using the app activates their participation. Early participants can receive immediate value, such as a discount on “Things to Do” bookings when they download the app and verify their U.S. phone number.

Strategic Vision by Tripadvisor Leadership

Tripadvisor President Kristen Dalton emphasized that the program is intended to reposition the brand as the starting point for trip planning—fueling habitual engagement, not just one-off transactions. She explained that the initiative is part of a broader effort to foster direct, ongoing relationships with travelers.

CEO Matt Goldberg, during the company’s Q2 earnings call, noted that app-driven engagement is growing rapidly. He added that as app users scale, these members will help reduce dependency on paid acquisition channels while driving strong average revenue per user growth. Goldberg also highlighted that Trip Cash rewards accumulate not only from bookings but also from active community participation, reinforcing travelers’ roles as contributors.

Reward Availability & Expiry

  • Pending to Available: Trip Cash appears in the member’s wallet within 24–48 hours after a booking or activity is completed.

  • Expiration: Unused Trip Cash expires 12 months after it is earned—counted from the day after the qualifying stay or experience was completed.

Eligibility & Future Plans

Currently, Tripadvisor Rewards is rolling out exclusively in the United States via the mobile app. The company has stated that global expansion is part of the roadmap, with future enhancements and new earning opportunities expected as the program evolves based on member feedback.

Why This Matters

  • Revolutionizes Loyalty in Travel
Unlike traditional programs, Tripadvisor’s model rewards not just bookings but also the planning and content contributions travelers already make.

  • Boosts App Engagement
Encouraging users to fully engage with the mobile app could help Tripadvisor build a stronger, direct-to-customer connection—reducing reliance on third-party advertising.

  • Immediate and Transparent Value
Clear and simple—no confusing points, tiers, or rewards. Earn 5%, spend it freely.

  • Community-Focused Growth
The invitation to earn by contributing reviews, photos, or advice turns habitual browsing into active participation, strengthening Tripadvisor’s content ecosystem.
