GLONew technology has been implemented at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints in JFK International Airport, enabling real-time validation of a traveller’s identification along with their flight details.
This deployment represents the latest iteration of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) aimed at verifying travellers’ identities. While first-generation CAT units are designed to scan a traveller’s photo identification and confirm their identity along with flight information, the new CAT units, known as CAT-2, offer additional capabilities. In addition to the existing functionalities, CAT-2 units are equipped with cameras that capture a real-time photo of the traveller. The system then compares this photo with the one on the presented ID, ensuring a match. Once the match is confirmed by the CAT-2 system, a TSA officer verifies the traveller’s identity, allowing them to proceed through the checkpoint without the need for exchanging a boarding pass. The captured photo is subsequently deleted.
These CAT-2 units are outfitted with cameras on tablets and are utilized to compare the face of the individual standing at the checkpoint with the face depicted on the traveller’s ID. This technology significantly enhances the detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent documents at security checkpoints. Importantly, the photos are not stored and are only utilized for the purpose of matching the person at the travel document checking podium with the photo on the presented ID.
John Essig, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport, emphasized the importance of identity verification in the security screening process. He highlighted that the new technology not only improves detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs but also enhances efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification. Moreover, the touchless feature of the unit allows passengers to insert their ID without handing it to a TSA officer, reducing touchpoints and expediting the process.
Essig further emphasized that credential authentication is pivotal in passenger identity verification, aiding TSA officers in validating travellers’ photo identification while identifying any inconsistencies associated with fraudulent travel documents.
