GLOPick n Pay has rolled out a major upgrade to its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) offering with a new app that brings instant eSIM activation, streamlined self-RICA identity verification, customisable plans, and richer Smart Shopper loyalty rewards.
Seamless Onboarding with eSIM and Self‑Service Verification
Users can now register, verify, and activate a mobile number entirely within the app—no need for a physical SIM or store visit. Compatible with eSIM-ready devices, the app provides instant eSIM provisioning. Physical SIM cards remain available for customers who prefer in-store activation or use non-eSIM smartphones.
Fully Customisable Mobile Plans
The new “Build Your Own Plan” feature allows prepaid customers to tailor their monthly data, voice, and SMS bundles. Plans are valid for 30 days and automatically renew unless cancelled, giving users flexibility and control over their usage and spend.
Top‑up, usage tracking, and plan adjustments can now be handled directly in-app, enhancing user autonomy and convenience.
Enhanced Smart Shopper Rewards
Mobile customers continue to earn Smart Shopper benefits, now enhanced through the app. For every R1 spent in-store—on a reload of at least R20—they receive 1 MB of free data instantly.
Pick n Pay has also introduced a loyalty tiered cashback system: after six consecutive months of using the app, users earn 5% back on monthly mobile spend; after nine months, this increases to 10%.
Powered by Huge NXTGN via MTN Network
Launched in 2020 and operating on MTN’s infrastructure, Pick n Pay Mobile leverages MVNE support from Huge NXTGN, a subsidiary of Huge Group listed on the JSE. This partnership has enabled embedded mobile services bundled with Pick n Pay’s retail reach. Jason Harmsen, Huge NXTGN’s Managing Director, noted the collaboration helps eliminate friction and cost from launching such services, combining retail access with flexible, modern connectivity platforms.
Strategic Implications and Competitive Context
The app relaunch coincides with price reductions across voice, data, and airtime—offering more value amid rising competition in South Africa’s MVNO space, including rival offerings like Spar Mobile and Boxercom.
Deven Moodley, Pick n Pay’s Executive Head of Value‑Added Services, Financial Services and Mobile, emphasized the focus on customer-centric technology: the app is designed to empower users with control, convenience, and transparent plans tailored to their needs.
