  • Customers now earn rewards automatically each time they tap their bank card to pay.
  • With every purchase at a Platō café, 5% cashback is instantly credited to their Platō App.

South African coffee brand Platō has unveiled a ground-breaking new loyalty programme in partnership with fintech innovators Yoyo and Yoco. Touted as the country’s first bank card-linked loyalty experience, the new system rewards customers with instant cashback—no plastic cards, QR codes, or app check-ins required.

Launched on 1 June, the programme automatically gives customers 5% cashback when they tap to pay with any bank card, including mobile wallets like Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. The cashback is then credited directly to the customer’s profile in the Platō app, creating a seamless and rewarding experience with every purchase.

What sets this initiative apart is the technology behind it. Yoyo’s loyalty engine integrates directly with Yoco’s point-of-sale system, embedding rewards into the payment process itself. This means the act of paying instantly activates the reward—removing the traditional barriers that often prevent customers from engaging with loyalty programmes.

The response has been strong. With more than 98 cafés across South Africa and plans to reach 150 by year-end, Platō reports that over 30% of in-store transactions are already being processed through the new loyalty system—twice the usual uptake rate for traditional programmes. Early signs suggest that South African consumers are embracing the simplicity and immediacy of cashback rewards.

Platō co-founder and CEO Stephan Bredell describes the loyalty launch as a natural extension of the brand’s mission. “Platō was never just about coffee. From the start, we set out to build something bigger—a brand that brings people together and adds value to everyday moments. This new app is just another step in that journey.”

Yoyo CEO Bevan Ducasse echoes the sentiment, calling it a milestone moment for the loyalty industry. “For years, our customers have asked for loyalty without extra cards or steps. With this partnership, your bank card becomes your loyalty card. It’s simple, automatic, and it’s exactly how loyalty should work in 2025.”

Getting started with the new programme is as easy as tapping your card. After entering a mobile number once at the till, customers can download the Platō app to track cashback in real-time. Every subsequent purchase will automatically generate a 5% cashback reward—no need to scan or swipe again.

This bold move by Platō not only simplifies loyalty but also reflects a growing shift toward more intuitive, tech-driven customer experiences. By removing the friction, the brand is redefining what it means to reward loyal customers—proving that sometimes, less really is more.
