The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted final approval for the integrated alliance between Qatar Airways Group and Virgin Australia. This decision paves the way for Virgin Australia to launch 28 weekly flights between Australia and Doha, utilizing aircraft and crew provided by Qatar Airways under a wet-lease arrangement. The new services are scheduled to commence in June 2025, connecting Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to Doha, with Melbourne flights starting in December 2025.

The partnership aims to enhance connectivity for Australian passengers, offering access to over 100 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa through Qatar Airways’ hub at Hamad International Airport. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey highlighted the anticipated benefits, stating, “This will likely place downward price pressure on these routes and will also give customers of Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways a greater choice of international flights with additional connectivity and loyalty program benefits.”

In addition to expanding travel options, the alliance is projected to significantly boost the Australian economy. Virgin Australia estimates an economic contribution of approximately AUD 3 billion over the next five years. The collaboration is also set to create employment opportunities, with Qatar Airways providing secondment positions for 20 Virgin Australia pilots and 40 cabin crew members in 2025.

This approval follows the Australian Government’s earlier endorsement of Qatar Airways Group’s acquisition of a 25% stake in Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia’s CEO, Dave Emerson, remarked, “This reflects a huge vote of confidence from a leading global airline in our business and in Australian aviation more broadly.”

The partnership also emphasizes sustainability, with both airlines collaborating on initiatives such as the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). In October 2024, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the use of SAF and other environmental management practices.

In summary, the ACCC’s authorization of the Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia alliance is set to enhance international connectivity, stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and promote sustainable practices in the aviation industry.
