QantasQantas pilots have begun training for the arrival of the first Airbus A321XLR aircraft in Australia, scheduled for April 2025. The airline has ordered 28 of these aircraft as part of its plan to replace its Boeing 737 fleet over the next decade. The A321XLR, known for its long range, will allow Qantas to introduce new non-stop routes and offer passengers a more comfortable experience with quieter cabins, larger overhead bins, and free Wi-Fi.
To prepare, Qantas has installed a new A320 simulator in Sydney, where over 240 pilots will undergo extensive training. This includes up to 60 hours in the simulator and annual recurrency sessions. Additionally, around 2,000 cabin crew will be trained on the new aircraft type.
The A321XLR’s cabin will feature wider and more comfortable seats compared to the 737, accommodating 197 passengers across two classes. The aircraft’s extended range will enable Qantas to operate more direct routes domestically and internationally, with improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized the significant opportunities this fleet renewal represents for both employees and customers, noting that the A321XLR is key to Qantas’ future operations and growth.
