GLOQantas is extending its “Neighbour Free” seating option to international customers, building on the success of this offering on its domestic flights earlier this year. The airline began a trial for Neighbour Free seating on 19 international routes this week, allowing some economy passengers to have an empty seat next to them.
According to Catriona Larritt, Qantas’ Chief Customer and Digital Officer, this move comes in response to positive feedback from customers who utilized the Neighbour Free option on domestic flights. The data revealed that it was particularly popular on longer journeys between the east and west coasts. To meet customer demand, the airline is introducing this feature on international routes.
Customers can secure a vacant “Neighbour Free” seat for an additional fee, such as AUD45 on trans-Tasman flights, AUD100 between Australia and Singapore, and AUD225 between Australia and the United States. Passengers will receive an email offering this option 48 hours before their flight, but the seat is not guaranteed until departure. If the seat is subsequently sold, customers will receive a refund.
During the trial period, Neighbour Free will only be available on Qantas-operated flights and for specific customers. Those who have purchased additional services, requested upgrades, are traveling with infants, or have unaccompanied minors in their bookings will not be eligible. Group bookings are also excluded from this offering. Qantas plans to expand this program in the coming months after testing it on select routes and bookings without additional products.
