Qantas has announced significant changes to its Frequent Flyer program, set to take effect from August 2025. These adjustments include an increase in the number of points required for Classic Reward seat bookings and upgrades, marking the first such change since 2019.

Key Changes:

  • Increased Points for Classic Rewards: From August 2025, the points needed to book Classic Reward seats and request Classic Upgrades will rise across both domestic and international flights, as well as with partner airlines. For example, a Business Class flight from Sydney to Melbourne will increase from 18,400 points plus $55 to 19,300 points plus $76, while an Economy flight from Sydney to London will go from 55,200 points plus $263 to 63,500 points plus $263.

  • Enhanced Points Earning Potential: Starting July 2025, members will earn up to 25% more points on Qantas domestic flights. Additionally, the existing cap on points earned for tiered members traveling in premium cabins will be removed, allowing for greater accumulation of points.

  • Expanded Reward Seat Availability: Qantas plans to unlock up to 1 million additional Classic Reward seats, particularly in premium cabins, through partnerships with airlines such as Finnair, Air France, KLM, Iberia, and Hawaiian Airlines. This expansion aims to provide members with more options for redeeming their points.

  • Lower Points for Jetstar Flights: The airline is introducing the lowest one-way Economy reward seat in Australia, with Jetstar short-haul domestic flights available for 5,700 points, helping members to earn their reward seat faster.

Andrew Glance, Qantas Loyalty CEO, stated that these changes are designed to enhance the program’s value and ensure its sustainability. He emphasized that while adjustments to points requirements are necessary, the airline is committed to providing greater access to reward seats and improving the overall member experience.

Members are encouraged to review these upcoming changes and plan their travel accordingly, taking advantage of current redemption rates before the new structure is implemented in August 2025.
