One year after Lufthansa Group launched Green Fares, more than 1 million passengers opted for the sustainable-friendly fare.

In the first year, an average of 3% of passengers used the offer, making an important contribution to more sustainable travel. In business class, Green Fares tickets are already selected for 11% of bookings via the Lufthansa Group portals.

Green Fares have gained popularity on routes like Hamburg-Munich, Zurich-London, and Frankfurt-Berlin, with demand steadily increasing across all booking classes, highlighting the success of this eco-friendly fare option. Since the introduction of Green Fares, travelers have offset over 77,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions associated with their flights, equivalent to the emissions from more than 12,000 flights between Hamburg and Munich using an Airbus A320neo.

These environmentally friendly fares are offered by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, and Air Dolomiti on over 730,000 flights annually within Europe and to destinations in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Since November 2023, the Lufthansa Group has also been experimenting with Green Fares on selected long-haul routes.

Green Fares operate within the fare structure established by the Lufthansa Group since 2015, offering travelers the option to offset their individual flight-related CO2 emissions through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and contributions to climate protection projects. SAF reduces CO2 emissions by 20%, while climate projects compensate for the remaining 80%. The Lufthansa Group ensures that the required amount of SAF is integrated into airport infrastructure within six months of purchase. Although SAF is blended with conventional fuel before transportation to airports, refueling individual selected flights isn’t feasible for operational reasons.

The Lufthansa Group’s CO2 compensation portfolio encompasses 15 projects, including innovative ventures such as Carbon Cure’s Sustainable Concrete and Biochar, aimed at promoting the evolution of the CO2 compensation market towards advanced technologies and ensuring long-term CO2 binding.

Presently, approximately 4% of Lufthansa Group passengers opt for sustainable flying options. Besides choosing Green Fares, passengers can customize their flight experience by selecting offers with a higher SAF content during booking or offsetting CO2 emissions during or after their flight. Notably, corporate clients are increasingly embracing sustainable flying options, with over 1,500 companies worldwide investing in SAF with the Lufthansa Group in 2023.

The Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 through a combination of reduction and compensation measures, with this target’s reduction share validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in August 2022.
