Ocado recently announced that it will begin a trial this month to sell everyday items like rice, pasta, and laundry detergent in refillable containers. This initiative is part of Ocado's efforts to accelerate its reduction of single-use plastics. The products, branded under Ocado Reuse, will be delivered in reusable containers, which will be collected by drivers during the next delivery. After inspection and cleaning, the containers will be refilled and delivered again.

GLOThe online grocer has collaborated closely with The Refill Coalition to design and implement the refilling and collection processes for its products.

The trial is being conducted in two phases. The first phase, occurring this month, will include items like 2kg bags of basmati rice and 1kg packets of penne pasta. The second phase, expected in the coming months, will feature 3-litre containers of fabric conditioner and non-bio liquid detergent.

There will be no additional charges for the reusable packaging, and customers can choose delivery and collection options for the refilled products. Simon Hinks, Ocado Retail’s product director, told The Guardian, “Most people understand how refilling works in physical stores, but this trial brings refillable packaging directly to customers’ doors. Our customers are already accustomed to returning their bags to our drivers for recycling, so this is a logical next step to help them reduce single-use plastic in frequently purchased products.”
Ocado partnered with The Refill Coalition, a UK group focused on large-scale refilling solutions for supermarkets, to develop the new refill processes. The containers, designed and supplied by Berry Global, can replace up to five single-use plastic containers and can be reused around 60 times.
A recent poll of over 2,000 UK adults conducted by Ocado revealed that one in three customers already use refillable options for at least one everyday item. Additionally, 75% of respondents indicated they would support more refillable options at supermarkets, provided prices remained the same and quality did not decrease.
In other news, Ocado has partnered with Alcampo to launch Spain’s first Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC). These CFCs are advanced warehouses utilizing robotics, artificial intelligence, and other smart technologies to ensure orders are packed and processed as efficiently as possible. Gregor Ulitzka, President Europe of Ocado Solutions, stated, “Our partnership with Alcampo is already transforming the quality of online services available to customers. We look forward to extending these benefits with this state-of-the-art CFC, the first of its kind in Spain.” Antonio Valverde, Alcampo’s director of ecommerce, added, “The opening of this CFC marks a milestone in our ambitious project to lead omnichannel grocery in Spain, delivering on our promise to allow customers to shop for groceries however, whenever, and wherever they choose.”
