In the “Connected Dining” series, PYMNTS research has monitored the proportion of customers who have encountered various technologies during their latest restaurant transactions. The findings indicate that, from spring to the current summer, there was a notable increase in the percentage of restaurants that established specific areas for pickups. This figure escalated from 34% in April to 40% in June of the current year.

A variety of restaurant chains, spanning quick-service restaurants (QSRs), fast-casual brands, and full-service eateries, have observed a trend where numerous customers are opting for pickup instead of delivery to avoid extra charges.
For instance, even a prominent QSR like Domino’s Pizza has witnessed a significant number of individuals seeking out more cost-effective options.
“Carryout customers, they really want value,” Domino’s CEO Russell Weiner told analysts on the company’s recent earnings call. “And one of the reasons they’re doing carryout is they want to avoid the tip; they want to avoid the delivery fee.”
As a result, numerous brands have been implementing alterations to their physical establishments. As an example, just last week, Wendy’s unveiled the inauguration of its inaugural “Global Next Gen” restaurants. These innovative establishments feature dedicated shelves for collecting orders and allocated parking spaces for patrons who are retrieving their mobile orders.
“We are excited to harness both design and technology to unlock digital and global growth to meet the demands of our customers today and tomorrow,” Wendy’s President, International & Chief Development Officer Abigail Pringle said in a statement, additionally noting that the brand is looking to make its restaurants “optimized to the digital age.”
Likewise, Taco Bell has recently introduced an updated iteration of its “Go Mobile” concept. This compact format does not include indoor seating, but rather focuses on catering to digital ordering customers. It includes designated parking spots, a pickup window, and shelves within the store for convenient order collection.
