Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Philippines’ busiest aviation gateway, has begun rolling out a new biometric immigration system designed to reduce queue times, enhance security, and improve the overall passenger experience.

The initiative forms part of a wider modernisation programme led by the New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC), which is undertaking a major transformation of the airport’s infrastructure and operations. The biometric rollout includes the phased installation of next-generation immigration eGates that use facial recognition and advanced document verification technology.

Faster, More Secure Border Control

The new system allows travellers to complete immigration checks in a matter of seconds, significantly reducing congestion during peak travel periods. By automating identity verification through biometrics, airport authorities aim to improve processing efficiency while strengthening border security through more accurate and reliable checks.

An initial batch of biometric eGates has already gone live, with additional units scheduled to be installed as terminal upgrades continue into 2026. Once fully deployed, the system is expected to handle a substantial portion of arriving and departing international passengers.

Part of a Broader Digital Transformation

Airport officials have positioned the biometric upgrade as a key component of NAIA’s ambition to become a more modern, globally competitive airport. Technology-led improvements are expected to play a central role in supporting growing passenger volumes while delivering a smoother, more seamless travel journey.

The rollout also aligns with wider efforts by Philippine immigration authorities to introduce biometric eGates at other major airports across the country, helping standardise faster and more secure border processing nationwide.

As airports around the world increasingly adopt digital identity and automated border solutions, NAIA’s biometric implementation reflects a broader industry shift toward contactless, efficient, and secure air travel experiences.
