Sainsbury'sSainsbury’s implemented measures in stores across the country after scammers exploited a vulnerability that allowed customers to buy large quantities of items at significantly reduced prices.
It has been reported that Sainsbury’s experienced a glitch, allowing shoppers to repeatedly use a £3.49 discount voucher at self-checkouts across the country.
According to reports, customers took advantage of this error to purchase full baskets of items for as little as £3. The issue was exacerbated by a fake coupon that circulated widely on WhatsApp, accompanied by a voice note providing a detailed guide on how to exploit the system.
The news spread quickly, prompting eager customers to visit their local stores in hopes of getting discounts. One shopper recounted their experience: “I was a bit excited but also nervous—it felt like something was off. I followed the instructions, and what should have cost around £70-80 ended up costing just under £2. It’s crazy how a small error in the system can lead to such big problems.”
Sources mentioned that Sainsbury’s might send out an email instructing customers not to use the coupons and inform employees about the issue. One source estimated significant financial losses, suggesting that some individuals may have exploited the glitch for thousands of pounds. However, Sainsbury’s has not confirmed the distribution of such an email and denied that any computer error occurred, stating that fraudulent coupons do not work.
