Heathrow Ends 100ml Liquid Rule with New Security Scanners

London Heathrow Airport has scrapped the 100ml liquid limit after completing the rollout of new CT security scanners across its terminals. Passengers can now keep liquids of up to two liters and laptops in their bags at security, cutting prep time and reducing plastic waste as Heathrow becomes the world’s largest airport to deploy the technology. Passengers traveling through London Heathrow Airport no longer need to remove liquids or laptops from their cabin bags at security, as the airport has completed the rollout of next-generation CT security scanners across all terminals.

With the new scanners now fully operational, travelers can carry liquids in containers of up to two liters in their hand luggage, ending the long-standing 100ml restriction that has been in place since 2006. The change also eliminates the requirement to place liquids in small plastic bags during security screening.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said the upgrade represents a major step forward for passenger experience and sustainability. He noted that travelers will spend less time preparing for security checks while the airport significantly reduces its use of single-use plastic bags. The scanner program, which represents a multi-billion-pound investment, positions Heathrow as the world’s largest airport to fully deploy the latest screening technology.

The move brings Heathrow in line with several other UK airports—including London Gatwick Airport, Birmingham Airport, Bristol Airport and Edinburgh Airport—that have already lifted liquid restrictions following the installation of CT scanners.

The UK government had originally set a June 2024 deadline for airports to complete scanner installations. However, technical challenges delayed deployment at several locations, prompting some airports in the UK and Europe to temporarily reinstate the 100ml rule during 2024.

Across Europe, the picture remains mixed. While a growing number of EU airports have eased or removed liquid limits after installing CT scanners, requirements can still vary by airport and even by terminal, leaving passengers advised to check local rules before traveling.

For Heathrow, the completion of the scanner rollout marks a milestone in modernizing security while improving passenger flow at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
