GLOPonant Acquires Majority Stake in Aqua Expeditions to Expand Global Reach
French luxury cruise operator Ponant has acquired a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions, a boutique cruise line known for its small-ship voyages to some of the world’s most biodiverse regions. The acquisition aims to support Aqua’s growth and enhance Ponant’s presence in high-end, eco-conscious travel markets.
Aqua Expeditions to Operate Independently Under Current Leadership
Francesco Galli Zugaro, Aqua Expeditions’ founder and CEO, will retain a stake in the company and continue to lead it as a standalone business unit. Aqua’s fleet operates in pristine destinations such as the Galapagos Islands, Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, Komodo, the Mekong River, and the Peruvian Amazon.
“Joining forces with another family-owned business allows us to uphold our commitment to luxury and sustainability,” Zugaro said. “With this partnership’s financial backing and expertise, we’re well-positioned to grow and provide guests with unforgettable journeys while staying true to our core values.”
A Strategic Move for Ponant
Backed by the Pinault family’s Artemis Group, Ponant described the acquisition as a strategic step toward strengthening its position in the luxury travel sector.
“This partnership aligns with our vision of excellence and sustainability,” said Herve Gastinel, CEO of Ponant Explorations Group. “We’re committed to offering extraordinary experiences in iconic destinations like the Galapagos while also expanding into river journeys. Francesco’s exceptional work over the past 18 years in experiential travel is truly inspiring.”
Aqua Expeditions Expands Horizons
In addition to its current itineraries, Aqua Expeditions is preparing to launch new East Africa voyages, including trips to the Seychelles, Tanzania, and the Aldabra Islands, known for their unique ecosystems and natural beauty.
Broader Industry Consolidation
This acquisition follows a wave of activity in the luxury cruise market, including a recent merger between UK-based Ambassador Cruise Line and Compagnie Francaise de Croisieres, aimed at creating a larger fleet.
With the support of Ponant, Aqua Expeditions is set to enhance its global presence, offering eco-conscious travelers more opportunities to explore the world’s most remarkable destinations in style.
