This innovative payment system empowers travelers to use over 100 supported cryptocurrencies—including BNB, Bitcoin (BTC), and USD Coin (USDC)—for nearly all travel-related transactions. From booking flights and paying for tourist visas to covering accommodation, the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), entry to cultural sites, guided tours, and even buying fresh produce at roadside stalls, visitors can now complete payments using simple QR code scans—both static and dynamic—on their Binance app.

Bhutan has taken a pioneering step in the global travel industry by becoming the first country to roll out a nationwide cryptocurrency-based payment system for tourism. In collaboration with Binance Pay and Bhutan’s digital-native financial institution DK Bank, the initiative allows visitors with Binance accounts to experience a fully cashless journey throughout the country.

Over 100 merchants across Bhutan, including businesses in remote and rural regions, are now equipped to accept crypto payments. The partnership addresses common challenges associated with digital payments in developing markets, such as high transaction costs and limited infrastructure. By leveraging Binance Pay’s platform, transactions are conducted with minimal fees, zero gas charges, and real-time settlement and confirmation, ensuring transparency and efficiency for both merchants and travelers.

This marks the first time a national tourism economy has integrated cryptocurrency as a primary form of payment on a systemic scale, making Bhutan a global trailblazer in merging financial innovation with cultural tourism. Security remains paramount, with encrypted transactions, two-factor authentication (2FA), and real-time verification mechanisms built into the Binance ecosystem.

Known globally as the “Kingdom of Happiness,” Bhutan is renowned for prioritizing Gross National Happiness (GNH) over conventional economic metrics like GDP. The country’s commitment to sustainable development, cultural preservation, and equitable growth aligns seamlessly with this digital initiative. By integrating crypto technology into its tourism infrastructure, Bhutan not only enhances visitor experiences but also broadens economic opportunities for small, often overlooked vendors in rural areas.

Binance CEO Richard Teng praised the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we not only advance the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also set a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences.”

More than just a payment solution, this initiative represents a bold commitment to digital inclusion, innovation, and national identity. Bhutan’s fusion of heritage and high-tech offers a model for how countries can leverage fintech to sustainably boost tourism while preserving their unique cultural fabric.
