Following extensive customer research and a commitment to enhance the customer experience, Amtrak has introduced a new, simplified fare structure that offers more flexibility and affordability. This new fare structure, launched this week, aims to provide a more consistent booking experience and simplify fare options. The changes reduce fare categories from three to two, making it easier for customers to choose the right ticket:

  1. Flex: Ideal for travelers seeking flexibility, these tickets are fully refundable and can be changed without fees before departure.

  2. Value: Designed for customers with fixed travel plans looking for a more cost-effective option, these tickets are priced lower than Flex tickets, non-changeable, and offer a 75% refund if canceled.

The new approach also brings additional benefits, such as:

  • Lower starting prices for Flex fares.
  • Occasional sale fares at deeper discounts, though they are non-changeable and offer a 50% refund if canceled.
  • Refunds for credit card purchases will be issued to the original payment method, rather than as an eVoucher.

These changes apply to Coach and Acela Business tickets, simplifying the ticket selection process for Amtrak customers. It’s important to note that non-Acela Business and First Class tickets were already fully refundable and changeable with no additional fees. Tickets purchased before the introduction of the new fare structure will continue to follow the fare rules and conditions in effect at the time of purchase.

These improvements are part of Amtrak’s ongoing efforts to make travel more affordable and enhance the customer experience. Recent pricing enhancements include the introduction of ultra-low “Night Owl” fares on select Northeast Corridor routes, expanded redemption options for Amtrak Guest Rewards members, improved children’s discounts, broader passenger discounts, and enhancements to Share Fares for group travelers.
