A Major Investment in Lounge Experience

American Airlines has announced a major investment at Miami International Airport (MIA) with plans to build a brand-new Flagship® lounge and expand the existing Admirals Club® facilities. Upon completion, this will nearly double American’s lounge footprint in Miami, offering passengers significantly more premium space.

What’s Changing

American currently operates three lounges in Terminal D:

  • An Admirals Club at Gate D15

  • Both a Flagship and Admirals Club at Gate D30

The airline intends to convert the 2017 Flagship lounge into an expanded Admirals Club while constructing a completely new Flagship lounge nearby.

Enhanced Design & Amenities

The new lounges will adopt a “neighborhood” layout with distinct zones for relaxing, dining, private workspaces, and spa-style shower suites. Travelers can expect amenity enhancements such as:

  • Champagne greetings

  • Locally inspired à la carte menus

  • High-speed Wi‑Fi, charging stations, and clear flight info

  • Kid-friendly rooms and quiet rest areas.

The Strategic Rationale

Miami serves as American’s largest hub globally, with over 400 daily flights to more than 160 destinations, annually transporting more than 30 million customers. Investing in premium lounges aligns with the airline’s role as the region’s hometown carrier and its commitment to improving passenger experience.

Industry Context

This upgrade comes amidst a trend of enhanced lounge offerings across U.S. airports. Similar high-end investments include Delta’s expansions in Seattle, Avianca and TAP Portugal’s involved lounge renovations, and American’s own recent launches in Philadelphia.

What’s Next & Access

While no specific construction timeline or opening date has been provided, American says more details will follow. Access to Admirals Club and Flagship lounges will continue via memberships, oneworld status tiers, premium cabin travel, and day-pass or single-visit options with AAdvantage® miles or fees.
