American ExpressAmerican Express to Acquire Center, Enhancing Expense Management Capabilities
American Express has announced its agreement to acquire Center, a payment and expense technology provider, as part of its plan to create a seamless, integrated expense management platform. By combining Center’s software with Amex’s corporate and small business card offerings, the acquisition aims to streamline financial management for businesses. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Strengthening the Card-Expense Connection
Founded in 2017 by Steve Singh, co-founder of Concur, Center is part of a broader investment portfolio under Madrona Ventures, which also includes Spotnana, Troop, and Direct Travel. Center CEO Naveen Singh, Steve Singh’s son, emphasized that the acquisition aligns with the company’s vision of deeply integrating card payments and expense management.
“By combining our best-in-class expense management technology with Amex’s leading commercial card products, we have a unique opportunity to deliver the next generation of commercial cards for small to medium-sized businesses,”Naveen Singh stated in a blog post. He assured customers that the transition would be smooth and that both companies remain committed to simplifying and improving expense management solutions.
What This Means for Businesses
With the acquisition expected to close in Q2 2025, pending customary approvals, American Express will leverage Center’s technology to provide a fully integrated expense management solution. While specific integration details have yet to be revealed, an Amex spokesperson confirmed that further announcements will be made post-acquisition.
Currently, Center’s platform operates on Mastercard’s network, but it remains unclear if this will change following the acquisition.
Impact on Steve Singh’s Travel & Expense Ecosystem
Despite the acquisition, Center will continue working within Singh’s travel-tech investment network. Spotnana founder Steve Singh stated that he expects the relationship between Spotnana and Center to strengthen, noting that the deal enhances the overall value proposition for customers.
“As far as we are concerned at Spotnana, our relationship with Center will only get better and stronger,” Singh said in a statement. “The combined value proposition for customers just improved.”
With American Express doubling down on expense management solutions, this move signals a continued focus on digitization, automation, and financial efficiency for businesses.
