American Airlines is set to launch a comprehensive redesign of its mobile app by the end of May 2025, aiming to enhance user experience and streamline travel management. This update is the result of a year-long initiative involving extensive customer feedback to address passenger needs and preferences.

Key Features of the Redesigned App

  • Personalized Home Screen: The new interface offers a tailored home screen displaying upcoming trips and AAdvantage® account information at a glance, facilitating quick access to essential travel details.

  • Dedicated AAdvantage® Section: A new section provides members with detailed insights into their loyalty status, accumulated miles, and account progression, simplifying the management of rewards and status tracking.

  • Enhanced Navigation: The app adopts a user-friendly layout inspired by popular mobile applications, ensuring intuitive navigation and reducing the learning curve for users.

  • iPad Optimization: Recognizing diverse device preferences, the app is now optimized for seamless use on iPads, ensuring a consistent experience across different platforms.

  • Live Activities Integration: For iOS users, the app supports Live Activities, allowing real-time flight updates to appear directly on the lock screen, keeping travelers informed about gate changes, boarding times, and other critical information without opening the app.

  • Comprehensive Trip Management: A new “Trips” section enables users to view and manage both upcoming and future itineraries, with intuitive options to review flight status and locate specific trips.

  • Inspirational Content: The app includes features that inspire travel by showcasing destinations served by American Airlines and providing information on engaging with the airline’s partners.

Retained Features

While introducing new functionalities, the app retains popular existing features, including:

  • Check-in capabilities

  • Seat selection

  • Baggage management

  • Mobile boarding passes

  • Apple Watch integration

  • In-flight entertainment access

  • Chat support with travel professionals

  • Siri shortcuts for quick access to flight details

  • Airport maps and turn-by-turn directions

  • Security wait times at select airports

Future Enhancements

Looking ahead, American Airlines plans to offer complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi to AAdvantage® members starting January 2026, sponsored by AT&T. This service will be available on aircraft equipped with Viasat and Intelsat high-speed satellite connectivity, covering approximately 90% of the fleet. The airline is also on track to equip over 500 regional aircraft with high-speed Wi-Fi by the end of 2025.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized that the redesigned app serves as a foundation for ongoing innovation:

“This newly redesigned app is the first step in giving us a base that will allow us to continue to build and release new features so we can always deliver what customers value most.”

The app update is being rolled out gradually and is expected to be available to all users by the end of May 2025. Users with the existing American Airlines mobile app will receive the update automatically.
