The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), launching in 2026, will let EU citizens securely store and share passports, IDs, biometrics, and payment details on their phones. Like Apple Pay or Google Pay, it brings a one-click experience to travel, replacing repetitive scans with fast, secure digital identity verification.

A New Era of Digital Identity in Travel

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) represents one of the most ambitious digital transformation initiatives in Europe. Available to all EU citizens by 2026, the wallet will allow travelers to securely store and share passports, national ID cards, payment methods, and even biometric profiles — all from their mobile device.

Just as Apple Pay and Google Pay simplified payments with one tap, the EUDI Wallet aims to bring the same one-click experience to travel, replacing repetitive document scans with fast, secure digital identity verification.

Testing in Action: Amadeus and Lufthansa Lead the Way

This summer, Amadeus and Lufthansa — partners in the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium’s Large-Scale Pilot project — successfully tested the wallet in both online and airport scenarios:

  • Online check-in: Rather than entering passport details manually, travelers could verify with a single tap using documents stored in the wallet.

  • Airport touchpoints: At check-in desks, self-service kiosks, bag drop machines, lounge entries, and boarding gates, passengers used their phone instead of physical documents. If biometrics were enabled, only a face scan was required.

  • Biometric enrollment: Travelers could securely share their pre-stored biometric profile with airlines during booking or at the airport, avoiding the need to take selfies or rescan documents.

  • Payments: Stored payment cards in the wallet allowed quick, secure purchases for ancillary services at airports or online.

In Amadeus’ Customer Showcase Room in Nice, a smaller group of travelers trialed the wallet across an end-to-end airport journey — check-in, bag drop, and boarding — demonstrating its potential for a seamless experience.

The next phase, scheduled for late 2025, will extend pilots to digital travel credential (DTC) use cases, including airport security checks and border control.

Amadeus Travel Ready: Enabling the Ecosystem

To support the rollout, Amadeus has enhanced its Travel Ready solution to ensure compatibility with the EUDI Wallet and future digital identity systems.

  • Integration for airlines and airports: Travel Ready provides the infrastructure to verify visas, identities, and biometrics — and to accept third-party wallets like the EUDI Wallet.

  • White-label digital wallet: Amadeus also offers its own customizable wallet for travel companies and airports, helping them adopt advanced verification processes.

  • Privacy by design: Key traveler data resides on the passenger’s own device, not on third-party servers, giving users full control over their data and privacy preferences.

  • Security at the core: Built on advanced standards and protocols, Travel Ready ensures secure storage and transmission of personal data.

Voices from the Pilot

“Air travel is about to get a lot easier for Europeans. By removing frustrating and repetitive document scans, EUDI Wallets fully digitalize identity verification, resulting in faster, smoother and more enjoyable travel.”
Frank Durm, Senior Director Ground Experience Product & Design, Lufthansa

“Digital identity is the missing piece of the jigsaw for truly seamless travel. With facial recognition being installed at airports, borders, cruise terminals, and even hotels, it won’t be long before travelers can breeze through every step in their journey without a passport. At Amadeus, we’re enabling interoperability of digital wallets across the ecosystem — a key step towards this transformation.”
Rudy Daniello, Executive Vice President, AirOps, Amadeus

Benefits for Travelers

  • Check in, drop bags, board with one tap: A fully digitalized, paper-free airport journey.

  • Less friction at every stage: No need to repeatedly scan passports or take selfies for biometric use.

  • Control and privacy: Users decide what data to share and when.

  • Faster processing: Automation reduces queues and manual checks.

  • Payment convenience: Wallets integrate both identity and payment credentials for a unified experience.

By 2026, the EU Digital Identity Wallet could allow millions of Europeans to travel across the continent without presenting physical IDs, streamlining everything from check-in to immigration. For airlines, airports, and border authorities, the shift promises greater efficiency, while passengers gain a smoother, more private, and more personalized travel journey.

The pilot tests by Amadeus and Lufthansa highlight a clear future: a one-click travel experience, where identity, biometrics, and payments merge into a single trusted digital wallet.
