GLOAlipay+, Ant International’s cross-border mobile payment and digitalization solution, has identified three trends that are shaping the future of tourism, benefiting global merchants and the industry.
Douglas Feagin, president of Ant International, emphasized the need for innovation and partnerships in tourism to foster economic growth. He noted that Alipay+ has evolved to include cross-border payments, destination marketing, and digital lifestyle services, leading to significant adoption as consumers increasingly use technology to enhance their travel experiences.
-
Travelers Prefer Familiar Payment Methods:
Alipay+ allows travelers to use their preferred home payment apps abroad, resulting in a surge in global transactions. As of October 2024, Alipay+ has over 30 payment partners and connects 1.6 billion consumers with more than 90 million merchants across 66 markets. Initiatives like national QR schemes are expanding merchant coverage, driving growth in smaller cities, and enabling seamless transactions. -
Increased Spending on Local Experiences:
There has been a shift in travelers’ spending habits post-COVID, with a rise in expenditures on localized experiences rather than shopping. Spending via Alipay+ has increased significantly in categories such as food and beverage (80%) and transportation (120%), reflecting a trend towards independent exploration of destinations. -
All-in-One Payment Apps Transforming Travel Habits:
All-in-one payment apps are becoming essential for Asian travelers, with partners like TrueMoney experiencing a tenfold increase in transaction volume since launch. These apps are enhancing travel experiences by providing seamless service and engagement throughout the journey. Merchants and tourism boards are utilizing the A+Rewards platform to promote local attractions and increase visibility, leading to a 53% increase in claimed destination vouchers in Southeast Asia in 2024.
Overall, Alipay+ aims to enhance the travel experience through technology and innovative partnerships, benefiting both consumers and the tourism industry.
