Air India, an airline owned by the Tata Group, has introduced a fresh brand identity and a new aircraft livery over the weekend, replacing the existing logo and colors that were introduced in 2014.

The renowned Maharaja mascot, a symbol associated with Air India since 1946, has a long-standing history. Throughout its extensive journey, dating back to its establishment in 1932, Air India has embraced eight different logos and branding variations.

The updated branding reimagines the iconic Indian window shape that Air India has historically used, transforming it into a gold window frame that takes center stage in the new brand design. This frame symbolizes a “Window of Possibilities.”

The new logo, called “The Vista,” draws inspiration from the apex of the gold window frame. This design represents boundless opportunities, progressiveness, and the airline’s confident and bold outlook for the future.

The freshly designed aircraft livery for Air India features a color palette of deep red, aubergine, and gold highlights, along with a pattern inspired by the chakra.

Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, expressed that the new brand reflects their aspiration to establish Air India as a world-class airline catering to global travelers, showcasing an updated image of India on the international stage. He further added that the revamped Air India brand is characterized by its vibrancy, confidence, warmth, and strong ties to its rich heritage, representing the globally acclaimed standards of Indian hospitality.

Passengers can expect to encounter the new logo during their travel experiences starting from December 2023, when the first Airbus A350 in the new livery enters the fleet.

As part of its transformation, Air India has launched a fresh website, mobile app, and loyalty program offering enhanced benefits. The digital platforms will also feature new digital tools to enhance the user experience.

Air India has also secured significant agreements to purchase a total of 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, valued at USD 70 billion. The delivery of new aircraft will begin from November of the current year.

The fleet modernization initiative of Air India has already commenced, with the airline leasing and procuring 20 widebody aircraft this year. A USD 400 million program is set to refurbish the interiors of its existing fleet of 43 widebody aircraft, with plans to install new seats in all cabins, introduce new inflight entertainment systems, and provide inflight Wi-Fi connectivity. By March 2024, a third of the widebody fleet will have undergone upgrades, and over the subsequent two and a half years, the entire long-haul fleet will be completely rejuvenated.
