Air Canada has introduced a real-time bag tracking feature in its mobile app. It allows passengers to follow the progress of their checked baggage (and, in some cases, mobility aids) from check-in through the journey and at connections, arrival, etc.

A key part of the feature is something called “What’s Next”, which helps travelers know:

  • which baggage carousel their bag will arrive on (or where to pick it up) at the end of the journey, or

  • the transfer point or location for baggage collection, in case of connecting flights.

Another useful component: in cases where bags are delayed, the app notifies customers and allows them to file a delayed baggage report via their phone. A confirmation number is provided, and updates follow.

Additionally, for mobility aids (e.g. wheelchairs, scooters), there’s functionality to track their movement, to see when they are loaded, etc.

Where It’s Available:

Air Canada has progressively rolled out this feature in a number of airports globally. Some of the airports (and cities) now served include:

In Europe: London, Paris, Dublin, Edinburgh, Rome, Milan and Copenhagen.

Outside Europe: Tokyo (both Haneda and Narita), Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Bogotá, Cancun, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Mexico City, Punta Cana, and Tulum.

Also, within Canada this service has been available for domestic flights since its launch.

Benefits to Passengers:

  • Transparency and peace of mind: Being able to see where your checked items are at various points (check-in, loading, arrival) helps reduce anxiety.

  • “What’s Next” guidance: Knowing which carousel, or where to collect baggage, or at what point you should expect to collect bags in a transfer scenario helps with planning and reduces confusion.

  • Notifications for delays: If a bag is delayed, the app sends updates and lets you conveniently file a claim/report from the app.

  • Mobility aids tracking: For travellers who need mobility aids, the ability to track their movement is especially important.

Limitations and Considerations:

While the public information is quite favourable, there are some limitations or caveats to bear in mind:

  • Dependence on scans & infrastructure: The accuracy and timeliness of tracking depend on scanning at various stages (check-in, loading, arrival, transfers). Where such scans are delayed or missing, the tracking may lag or be less precise.

  • Airport participation: Not all airports are eligible yet. Only certain airports are included in the roll-out so far. If you travel via an airport not yet included, you likely won’t get full tracking.

  • Delay in updates: Even in enrolled airports, there may be some lag between when a bag is actually moved and when the system records/updates the position.

  • Overnight or long layovers: There may be cases (especially with long layovers or non-standard connections) where the tracking or baggage routing behaves less predictably. Some reports from users suggest confusion in those scenarios.

Context & Why This Matters:

  • Industry trend: Many airlines are moving toward more transparency for their customers, especially with baggage mishandling being one of the common complaints. Real-time baggage tracking helps address that.

  • Service improvements: The feature is an example of how technology (tag scanning, mobile apps) is being applied to reduce “black holes” in the travel experience.

  • Competition & customer expectations: As more airlines offer baggage tracking, travellers increasingly expect to know “Where is my bag?”. Having this capability may be a differentiator for Air Canada.
