Melbourne Airport is set to revolutionize its baggage experience, becoming the first airport worldwide to deploy Amadeus’ Seamless Bag Drop S7 Air and S7 Air Hybrid units. Australia’s busiest airport operating 24/7 will overhaul its entire self-service bag drop system with Amadeus technology.

The hybrid design of the new units allows them to function either as fully self-service bag drops or as agent-assisted stations, providing maximum flexibility for airport operations.

Handling more than 35 million travelers in 2024, Melbourne Airport is the country’s only major curfew-free gateway operating one international and three domestic terminals under a single roof. As part of its ongoing commitment to delivering a smoother, more efficient passenger journey, the airport will roll out over 70 next-generation S7 Air and S7 Air Hybrid bag drop units.

Passengers will enjoy a distinctive side-loading design that simplifies placing luggage onto the belt and accommodates bulky items such as wheelchairs, prams, and trolleys. Advanced automation allows the units to detect incorrectly positioned bags or those needing tubs, reducing staff involvement and streamlining the check-in process.

The deployment of these new Seamless Bag Drop units will enable Melbourne Airport to optimize terminal space, boost check-in capacity, and minimize queues by giving passengers full control of their bag drop. With around half the units capable of switching to hybrid mode, the airport can alternate between staffed and fully automated bag drop depending on demand.

Jim Parashos, Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airport, said:
“We’re proud to be the first airport in Australia to introduce Amadeus’ most advanced bag drop technology, making it faster and easier for passengers to check in their bags. Accessibility is a top priority for us, and these units will significantly improve the experience for travelers with additional needs through enhanced audio and visual interfaces.”

Sarah Samuel, Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, Air Ops at Amadeus, added:
“We’re delighted to support Melbourne Airport as it redefines the self-service journey with a new seamless bag drop experience. The S7 Air is our most advanced solution, designed to empower all passengers—including those requiring special assistance—to use self-service confidently. We’re excited to bring this innovation to Melbourne travelers.”

The Series 7 Bag Drop is engineered with accessibility at its core. Its side-loading mechanism enables wheelchair users to handle the bag drop process more easily, while the interface follows modern accessibility standards with advanced audio and visual guidance. Amadeus technology has seen rapid adoption across Australia in recent months, including powering the nation’s first fully biometric departure process.
