09 December 2025.

Korean Air and its sister carriers within the Hanjin Group — Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan and Air Seoul — have announced plans to introduce Starlink-powered high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi across their combined global fleets, marking a major milestone in South Korean aviation connectivity.

This will be the first time a South Korean airline group adopts Starlink for commercial in-flight internet, positioning the Hanjin Group at the forefront of next-generation onboard connectivity as Korean Air and Asiana move toward full operational integration.

Starlink, developed by SpaceX, uses a rapidly expanding constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver broadband speeds of up to 500 Mbps — a dramatic leap over traditional in-flight systems that rely on distant geostationary satellites or ground-based networks. With satellites orbiting at roughly 550 kilometers above Earth, Starlink offers lower latency, higher reliability and stronger global coverage, including over oceans and remote regions.

Once deployed, passengers across all cabins — from economy to premium — will have access to fast, reliable internet suitable for HD video streaming, video conferencing, cloud-based work, online gaming, shopping and real-time messaging, enabling a ground-like digital experience at 35,000 feet.

Fleetwide Installation Begins in 2026

All five airlines will begin installation preparation and certification testing later this year, with service entry expected to begin as early as the third quarter of 2026. The pace of rollout will vary by airline and aircraft type.

  • Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will prioritize installation on long-haul widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A350-900.

  • Following the full integration of Asiana Airlines, the group plans to complete fleetwide Starlink installation by the end of 2027.

  • Jin Air will begin with its newest Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

  • Air Busan and Air Seoul will review their fleets and determine installation priorities based on operational needs.

The move reflects the group’s long-term strategy to modernize onboard services, standardize the passenger experience across all brands, and strengthen its competitiveness in long-haul and premium markets.

A Step Change in Passenger Experience

“Connectivity is now an essential part of the travel experience,” a Korean Air representative said. “With Starlink, our customers will enjoy fast, seamless internet throughout their journey. As Korea’s flag carrier, we remain committed to upgrading our services and infrastructure to deliver a truly elevated passenger experience as we work toward becoming the world’s most loved airline.”

Starlink’s aviation solution has already been adopted by a growing number of global carriers in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, driven by rising passenger expectations for uninterrupted connectivity comparable to what they experience on the ground. Unlike legacy systems that often suffer from slow speeds and patchy coverage, Starlink delivers consistent performance gate-to-gate, including over polar routes and open oceans.

Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, said:
“We’re excited to bring industry-leading, high-speed internet to Korean Air and the entire Hanjin Group airline family. With Starlink onboard, passengers will be able to stay productive, stream content, and game just as they would on the ground.”

Supporting Integration and Digital Transformation

The Starlink rollout also supports the broader digital transformation of the Hanjin Group airlines, particularly as Korean Air progresses with its acquisition and integration of Asiana Airlines. A unified, high-performance connectivity platform will help standardize inflight services, streamline crew operations, and enable new digital cabin products such as real-time e-commerce, advanced inflight entertainment, and connected crew applications.

In the longer term, high-capacity connectivity also enables data-driven aircraft maintenance, predictive analytics, and real-time operational monitoring — enhancing safety, reliability and efficiency across the group’s expanding global network.
