Delta is expanding its fare reclassification with a new Comfort Basic tier, launching Nov. 19 in select U.S. markets. Comfort Basic includes extra legroom, overhead bin space, Zone 3 boarding and complimentary drinks but comes with major limits: no upgrades, no seat selection until check-in, fewer SkyMiles, no miles purchase, no same-day changes and nonrefundable rules. With this addition, Delta now offers 12 branded fare categories across its cabins. (Image Delta)

Delta27 November 2025 – Delta Air Lines is expanding its overhaul of fare categories with the introduction of a new Comfort Basic option, adding yet another tier to its increasingly segmented cabin structure. The move follows Delta’s earlier announcement that its Main Cabin would be reclassified into Basic, Classic and Extra tiers beginning Oct. 1. The airline is now applying this same three-level structure to its Comfort products, which offer extra legroom and enhanced onboard amenities compared with Main Cabin.
The new Comfort Basic fare will debut on Nov. 19 in select domestic markets, according to Delta. It becomes the third tier within the Comfort cabin, joining Comfort Classic and Comfort Extra.

What Comfort Basic Includes—and What It Doesn’t
Comfort Basic passengers will receive the core Comfort experience—additional legroom, dedicated overhead bin space, Zone 3 boarding, and complimentary beer, wine and spirits. Travelers will also earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars and retain Delta Sky Club access if eligible through membership or credit card benefits.
However, the new fare comes with significant restrictions compared to other Comfort tiers:
-
Fewer SkyMiles seat-earning miles
-
Seat assignment only after check-in, with a strong likelihood of receiving a middle seat
-
Miles cannot be used to purchase the fare
-
Not eligible for Medallion upgrades
-
No same-day confirmed or standby changes
-
Nonrefundable, though cancellations may result in a partial eCredit
-
Changes allowed only with a fee
Delta has stated publicly that the introduction of Comfort Basic aligns with its multi-year strategy to provide more price points and options for travelers, a trend seen across major U.S. carriers as airfare retailing becomes more granular.
A Growing Library of Fare Types
With Comfort Basic added, Delta now offers 12 seating classifications across its network:
-
Main Cabin: Basic, Classic, Extra
-
Comfort+: Basic, Classic, Extra
-
Premium Select: Classic, Extra
-
First Class: Classic, Extra
-
Delta One: Classic, Extra
Public information on Delta’s website confirms that several of these tiers—such as Main Basic, Comfort Basic, Main Classic, Comfort Classic, Premium Select Classic, First Classic and Delta One Classic—are now categorized as nonrefundable fares.
Why Delta Is Adding More Fare Levels
Airlines have increasingly used fare segmentation to capture a wider range of traveler preferences and willingness to pay. Ultra-low-cost carriers pioneered à-la-carte pricing, and major legacy carriers like Delta, United and American have adopted their own multi-tier fare structures to remain competitive while generating incremental revenue.
Delta, in particular, has leaned heavily into product differentiation—expanding its premium footprint, adding more branded fares and introducing new merchandising options through modernized retailing channels.
