Korean Air recently hired 17 athletes with disabilities and will support their training and participation in competitions.

The newly hired athletes were recommended by the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities (KEAD) and Seoul Sports Association for the Differently abled (SSAD) and underwent an interview process in the first half of the year.

The new employees are made up of curling, swimming and table tennis athletes ranging from rising stars to those with experience at international competitions. They will continue to train and compete as athletes while being Korean Air employees. The athletes will be paid for their time spent training, and the airline will also offer them a variety of benefits such as flight tickets, childcare support and bonuses for entering national competitions.

Korean Air held a welcome party and training session for the athletes on August 1 at the KEAD’s Guro Digital Training Center. About 40 people attended including Seo Hoyoung, Vice President of Korean Air’s Human Resource Department; Lee Choong Hee, general manager and head of Korean Air’s Sports Administration and Support Office; Cha Jung hoon, KEAD Employment Promotion Director and Lee Jang Ho, Secretary General of Seoul Sports Association for the Differently abled (SSAD), along with the athletes and their families.

Youn Soon-Young, a newly hired curling athlete who is a member of the men’s national deaf curling team, said, “I am happy and grateful to be part of the Korean Air team, and I will dedicate myself to training and do my best to win the gold medal at the Deaflympics next year.”

“We are thrilled to support athletes as well as sports for those with physical disabilities. We hope the athletes will be able to focus on their training and perform at their best,” said Jong Min Kim, head of the human resources strategy team at Korean Air.
