GLOIn August of 2023, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw a continued expansion in air traffic, leading to its recognition as “Asia’s Leading Airport 2023” and “China’s Leading Airport 2023″ in the 30th World Travel Awards. Vivian Cheung, the Chief Operating Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), expressed her appreciation, stating: “We are honoured that HKIA has been named ‘Asia’s Leading Airport’ and ‘China’s Leading Airport’ this year in the World Travel Awards. We have introduced various new facilities, services and technologies to give passengers a brand-new airport experience.”
Cheung further emphasized, “It is most encouraging to learn that travellers and industry experts worldwide acknowledge and appreciate our efforts through their votes.”

The World Travel Awards are renowned for celebrating excellence in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries and are considered a global benchmark of industry accomplishment. These awards are determined by travel industry specialists and passengers from around the world. Notably, HKIA secured the title of “China’s Leading Airport” for the second consecutive year, having also been named “Asia’s Leading Airport” in both 2020 and 2021.
In August 2023, HKIA handled approximately 4.0 million passengers, signifying a 5% increase compared to July 2023. The daily average passenger count approached 130,000, marking a recovery to around 66% of the pre-pandemic level. Additionally, flight movements and cargo throughput experienced month-on-month growth of 4.3% and 1.7%, reaching 25,055 movements and 367,000 tonnes, respectively.
The surge in passenger traffic in August was remarkable, standing at 7.3 times higher than the low base of the same month in the previous year, while flight movements increased by 1.2 times. Notably, Mainland China and Japan witnessed the most significant spikes in traffic to and from Southeast Asia.
Cargo throughput exhibited an impressive 8.5% year-on-year increase, with export volume experiencing a remarkable 20.5% surge compared to the same period last year. The traffic to and from pivotal trading regions in the Middle East, Europe, and North America displayed the most notable increments.
Over the first eight months of the year, HKIA managed an impressive 24.4 million passengers, which was more than 13 times the recorded base for the same period in 2022. The airport also handled 167,895 flight movements, representing an astounding 97.4% year-on-year growth. However, there was a slight decrease in cargo volume by 2.6% year-on-year, totaling over 2.7 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume at HKIA demonstrated a remarkable 11-fold year-on-year increase, reaching 28.3 million. Flight movements, on the other hand, saw a substantial surge of 55.7% to 221,585. Despite this growth, there was a decrease of 11.8% in cargo throughput, amounting to 4.1 million tonnes.
