Leading up to the Chinese New Year holiday period, international travel from China has surged significantly, increasing by a factor of 10. This surge is attributed to more relaxed visa policies, especially towards Asian destinations, as reported by Trip.com earlier this week.

Trip.com has analyzed the current situation in China’s outbound and inbound travel markets during one of its busiest travel seasons. They predict that the festive month will witness a record-breaking 9 billion inter-regional movements, with February 8th, the eve of Reunion Day, anticipated to be the busiest travel day of the season.

The surge in travel is particularly evident across Asia, with Chinese outbound travelers showing a preference for short-haul routes. Southeast Asia, Japan, and South Korea are among the top choices, with Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand being popular destinations.

The increase in bookings for trips within the Asia Pacific region is largely fueled by relaxed visa requirements. Since July of the previous year, China has announced bilateral visa-free arrangements with over 10 countries. Following these announcements, there has been a notable increase in search volume for destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, particularly after mutual visa exemption agreements were signed. For example, searches for Singapore tourism products surged by more than 30% shortly after the visa-free announcement between Singapore and China. Similarly, Thailand experienced a more than six-fold increase in searches for flights and hotels after signing a mutual visa exemption agreement on January 28th.

Additionally, there is a growing trend of family-centric travel during the Spring Festival, constituting 47% of all travelers this year, a 5% increase from the previous year. Families are embracing various travel preferences, such as renting cars for flexibility, opting for customized tours, and hiring local guides to curate personalized experiences.

Regarding tourist attractions during the Spring Festival, theme parks in Asia are popular, while Europe attracts travelers with its rich cultural heritage and historical sites.

Cruise tourism has also seen a surge in popularity during the Spring Festival, with sold-out schedules for cruise ships sailing from Shanghai, and strong demand in Hong Kong and Singapore. Notably, Italian cruise line Costa Serena and RWS’ Genting Dream from Hong Kong and Singapore have seen high demand, with limited availability remaining. The average booking window for cruises this year is 35 days earlier than in 2019, indicating a significant increase in early reservations and demand growth.
