Japan Airlines (JAL) is participating in the “FRY to FLY Project”(*1), which aims to realize a decarbonized society through domestic resource recycling, and is promoting initiatives for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by utilizing used cooking oil as its feedstock.
JAL has signed a partnership agreement with Yokohama City, a participant in the project, to establish and implement a system for collecting used cooking oil from households for its utilization as SAF feedstock. Starting from March 2024, efforts to collect used cooking oil from households in Yokohama City will be initiated at AEON Food Style Kamoi store operated by Daiei.
(*1) Press Release No. 23006 dated April 17, 2023. “Participation in the ‘FRY to FLY Project’, for the Realization of a Decarbonized Society through domestic resource recycling” (only in Japanese)

【Cooperative Initiatives】
1. Establishment and social implementation of a comprehensive system for utilizing used cooking oil as feedstock of SAF.
2. Promotion and awareness-raising among citizens regarding the recycling of used cooking oil into SAF, etc.

【Collection and Recycling Process】
1. Collect used cooking oil in a dedicated collection bottle for each household, and pour it into a collection box installed at the store. Empty bottles can be reused at home.
2. When the collection box is filled with a sufficient amount of used cooking oil , used cooking oil collection operators will collect and transport it to a SAF or other manufacturing plant.
3. The manufactured SAF will be used by airline s to reduce CO2 emissions. (*2)
(*2) The actual utilization of collected used cooking oil as SAF is scheduled to start after 2025. Until then, it will be used as feedstock of biodiesel and other purposes.

The JAL Group is committed to achieving the target of replacing 1% of total fuel on board with SAF by 2025 and 10% by 2030. To accomplish this, JAL is procuring SAF domestically and internationally, and is supporting the manufacturing and commercialization of domestically produced SAF by collaborating with stakeholders across industries within Japan. In Sakai City, Osaka, the construction of Japan’s first SAF manufacturing plant is underway with the goal of commercializing domestically produced SAF by 2025. While used cooking oil is expected to be the primary feedstock of SAF for this plant and future plants, a large amount of household used cooking oil is being disposed of without being utilized. JAL aims to promote the spread of collection systems for these unused resources from households and plans to expand this initiative from Yokohama City to other regions nationwide.

【Schedule of the collection of used cooking oil】
For the initial phase of this initiative, the establishment of a collection system at AEON Food Style Kamoi store (*3) will commence. In parallel, an event called “FRY to FLY” will be held with the aim of raising awareness about SAF. Further details regarding these activities will be available through social media channels of JAL, Yokohama City, and Daiei.
(*3) Location: AEON Food Style Kamoi store (1-6-1 Kamoi, Midori-ku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture). 3 mins walk from the South Exit of Kamoi Station on the JR Yokohama Line.
