Starting Sunday, July 1, 2024, the annual fee for the Virgin Australia lounge program will increase from $399 to $450. Additionally, a $99 joining fee will be reinstated for all new non-Lifetime memberships and for renewals more than a month after expiration.
For those who find annual membership too expensive, one-off lounge passes remain available at $65 for adults and $45 for children aged 2-17.
Virgin Australia lounge membership grants access to all seven lounges located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra. Velocity frequent flyers with Gold or Platinum status already enjoy lounge access as part of their benefits.
This membership has been particularly beneficial for Velocity Red and Silver members. In contrast, Qantas increased the cost of its Qantas Club membership in April 2024, with the annual fee now at $699 and a $129 joining fee.
The Qantas Club program offers more extensive benefits, including access to about two dozen domestic lounges and international lounges of Qantas and selected partners, along with non-lounge perks like priority check-in, extra checked baggage, priority waitlisting on full flights, and last-minute upgrades to business class using Qantas Points.
Whether Virgin Australia lounge membership is worthwhile depends on travel habits. It’s most valuable for regular economy class travelers who don’t fly enough to achieve Velocity Gold status. It’s less relevant for business class travelers, who already have lounge access, or those who often travel with companions who can bring them in as guests.
With annual membership costing $450 and single visits at $65, membership becomes cost-effective after seven visits per year.
Lifetime membership, costing $9,750, equates to 150 individual visits or about 104 visits at the discounted senior rate. This option is beneficial if you plan to use the lounges frequently enough to justify the cost, compared to annual memberships.
However, lifetime membership involves risks, such as potential changes in lounge availability or program discontinuation. Given that lifetime membership breaks even after 21 years, many travelers may prefer the flexibility of annual memberships, allowing them to opt-out if the service no longer meets their needs.
