China Eastern Airlines is increasing its seasonal flights from Yantai, a coastal city in China, to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

Yantai, historically known as Chefoo, is located in the northeastern Shandong province of China, on the Shandong Peninsula.

The inaugural flight from Yantai to Kuala Lumpur took place on 28 July, with China Eastern Airlines planning to operate this route twice weekly until 29 August. The flights are on Wednesdays and Sundays, utilizing an A320 aircraft. Flight MU7363 departs Yantai at 1750 and arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 0020 the next day. The return flight, MU7364, leaves Kuala Lumpur at 0120 and lands in Yantai at 0750 on Mondays and Thursdays.

Tourism Malaysia executives and KLIA airport officials welcomed the first flight at a ceremony held at the Tourist Information Centre Arrival Hall in Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 28 July.

China Eastern Airlines will also start seasonal flights from Yantai to Bangkok, with an additional service beginning on 5 August and running through 20 August. The airline will operate three weekly flights using A320s, a route that was last active in February 2020 before being paused due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The flights from Yantai to Bangkok are scheduled as follows: Flight MU7367 departs Yantai at 2240 and arrives in Bangkok at 0315 on Mondays and Fridays, and at 2255 on Wednesdays. The return flight, MU7368, leaves Bangkok at 0415 and arrives in Yantai at 1025 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Yantai, compared to major Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, has a smaller role in travel to Southeast Asia due to its limited direct flight options. Most flights are seasonal or chartered, connecting Yantai to popular Southeast Asian destinations. Travelers from Yantai often transit through larger Chinese hubs with more flight options to Southeast Asia.

Yantai, a coastal city on the southern coast of the Bohai Strait, borders Qingdao to the southwest and Weihai to the east. It is Shandong’s largest fishing seaport, with a population of 6,968,202 as of the 2010 census, and 2,227,733 residents in the urban districts of Zhifu, Muping, Fushan, and Laishan.
