AirAsia is set to launch a new service to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, known for its numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Starting on 2 October 2024, the airline will offer four weekly flights on the Bangkok Don Mueang-Kathmandu route using an A320neo aircraft.

To promote the new route, AirAsia is offering a special fare starting at NPR9,990 per trip (USD74.35). Bookings for this promotional fare are available until 25 August 2024, for travel between 2 October 2024 and 28 March 2025. In comparison, other airlines such as THAI and Thai Lion are offering roundtrip fares on popular booking platforms, with THAI quoting USD337 from BKK and Thai Lion quoting USD271 from DMK. Outside of the promotion, AirAsia’s roundtrip fare from DMK is quoted at USD188.

With the introduction of AirAsia’s service, there will now be four airlines operating between Bangkok and Kathmandu: two from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and two from Don Mueang Airport (DMK). AirAsia will join Thai Lion, which operates three roundtrip flights to Kathmandu from DMK, while Thai Airways and Nepal Airlines operate from Suvarnabhumi Airport, with Thai Airways offering two daily flights and Nepal Airlines three weekly.

Thai AirAsia CEO Santisuk Klongchaiya highlighted that this is AirAsia’s 16th destination in South Asia since resuming near full-scale operations post-pandemic. He emphasized the significant growth potential in the region, which has driven the airline to expand its services to meet the demand for tourism, trade, and business travel.

Nepal is a culturally rich destination, with attractions such as Swayambhunath, a temple complex featuring the Buddha’s eyes on its main stupa, and Boudhanath, the country’s largest pagoda and a World Heritage site since 1979. Kathmandu’s Durbar Square, located in the ancient capital of Bhaktapur, is another historical highlight.

Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, is a key pilgrimage site near the Indian border, and for nature lovers, Nepal offers breathtaking mountain views. Nearby Pokhara is home to the famous Annapurna Base Camp, where hikers can visit Phewa Lake before heading to Everest Base Camp, a popular mountaineering destination.

AirAsia now operates 16 routes to South Asia, providing 87 weekly flights to destinations such as Jaipur, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Gaya, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Tiruchirappalli, Hyderabad, Dhaka, Colombo, Maldives, and its latest addition, Kathmandu.

AirAsia’s flight schedule for the BKK-KTM route is as follows:

  •  Flight FD182 departs DMK at 11:50 and arrives in KTM at 14:00.
  •  Flight FD183 departs KTM at 15:00 and arrives in DMK at 19:35.

These flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
