Air Canada has announced plans to provide free Wi-Fi to Aeroplan members starting in May 2025, expanding its partnership with Bell, which already enables free in-flight text messaging. This new service will initially be available on Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft for North American and Central American flights, with long-haul international routes to follow in 2026.

The airline promises “streaming-quality” internet across Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and most Air Canada Express aircraft. Mark Nasr, Air Canada’s executive vice-president of marketing and digital, and president of Aeroplan, highlighted that free Wi-Fi has become a growing expectation among both business and leisure travelers. “We wanted to ensure critical mass availability before making this announcement,” Nasr stated.

Currently, Air Canada offers paid Wi-Fi packages starting at $6.50 for one hour, $21 for a one-way pass, and $65.95 for a monthly plan. These options will remain available for non-Aeroplan members.

This move follows similar initiatives by other Canadian airlines. WestJet, in partnership with Telus, began rolling out free Wi-Fi for WestJet Rewards members in July 2024 via Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellite network. WestJet aims to equip its narrow-body fleet by the end of 2025 and wide-body aircraft by 2026. Porter Airlines also offers complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers on its Embraer E195-E2 fleet, a service introduced in 2022.

Currently, over two-thirds of Air Canada’s Boeing 737 MAX fleet is Wi-Fi enabled, with the rest set to be upgraded by next year. Wi-Fi installations will also expand across most Air Canada Express aircraft serving regional routes in Canada and the U.S.

This announcement builds on the free Wi-Fi texting service introduced for Aeroplan members in May 2023, sponsored by Bell. That service allows loyalty members to send and receive messages via platforms like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, and Google Messages on any Wi-Fi-enabled device, regardless of their mobile carrier.
