TripadvisorTripadvisor has announced a collaboration with AI-powered answer engine Perplexity to transform the way travelers plan their journeys. The partnership integrates Tripadvisor’s extensive database, including user reviews, AI-generated summaries, and more than 300,000 experiences from Viator, into Perplexity’s chatbot-style search engine.
A Seamless, Personalized Travel Experience
The goal of the partnership is to deliver personalized and actionable recommendations, simplifying and enhancing the trip-planning process. Early features of the integration are already live on Perplexity.ai, with more enhancements planned over the next three years.
Rahul Todkar, Tripadvisor’s head of data and AI, explained, “As travelers increasingly seek personalized and contextual AI-driven insights, our collaboration with Perplexity redefines trip planning. By combining Tripadvisor’s trusted expertise with Perplexity’s advanced AI search, we aim to create a seamless and enjoyable planning experience for modern explorers.”
Perplexity’s co-founder Johnny Ho shared his enthusiasm, highlighting that travel is one of the top search categories on the platform. “We’re thrilled to team up with Tripadvisor to make their trusted recommendations easily accessible through our AI-driven answer engine,” he said.
Unlocking Rich, Contextual Insights
While some may question the need for a formal partnership—given Perplexity could theoretically surface Tripadvisor results independently—the collaboration grants Perplexity direct access to Tripadvisor’s extensive repository of reviews, ratings, and recommendations. This access enables results to be tailored to the user’s query, preferences, and context, a capability otherwise unattainable.
As AI changes how users find travel information, the partnership positions Tripadvisor for greater visibility in AI-powered search tools. According to Mike Coletta, Phocuswright’s senior manager of research and innovation, this strategic move ensures Tripadvisor stays relevant as travelers increasingly rely on tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Overcoming AI Limitations with Real-Time Data
AI-driven platforms often struggle with providing live, up-to-date data. Christian Watts, CEO of Magpie, noted that deals like this can help Perplexity incorporate real-time information, such as product availability and reviews, to improve the accuracy and speed of search results.
Tripadvisor’s Expanding AI Initiatives
This partnership builds on Tripadvisor’s previous AI advancements. In mid-2023, the company integrated OpenAI to assist with trip planning and later introduced AI-generated summaries for hotels. Updates to its “Trips” planning tool have added hotels and activities to AI-powered itineraries, increasing user engagement and revenue.
During its Q3 2023 financial results, Tripadvisor reported that members using its itinerary tools were more likely to return to the platform and generated three times more revenue than average users. CEO Matt Goldberg emphasized the success of these early AI initiatives and announced plans to launch the full trip-planning product for iOS and Android.
By partnering with Perplexity and continuing to expand its AI capabilities, Tripadvisor is reinforcing its commitment to innovation and delivering smarter, more efficient travel experiences.
