United AirlinesUnited Airlines Dismisses JetBlue Merger Speculation
Speculation over a potential merger or asset purchase involving United Airlines and JetBlue gained traction this week following JetBlue’s earnings call on Tuesday. During the call, CEO Joanna Geraghty mentioned ongoing discussions with multiple carriers regarding future partnerships, referencing the legal framework set by a Massachusetts judge in a prior case. However, she emphasized that there was “nothing to announce now.”
Her remarks quickly fueled industry chatter about United Airlines seeking a Northeast partner to regain access to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. United had exited JFK in 2022 to focus operations at nearby Newark International. Given JetBlue’s strong presence at JFK—holding 31% of domestic market share as of August, according to Cirium—analysts speculated that a deal could be in the works.
On Friday, United Airlines moved swiftly to put the rumors to rest. In a brief regulatory filing, the airline made it clear that no merger or acquisition discussions were taking place. “The company is not in negotiations or discussions with any other airline regarding a merger, acquisition, or similar strategic transaction and has not been in any recent discussions with any airlines regarding the same,” the statement read.
Despite United’s denial, speculation continued over the weekend. Industry experts on X debated the possibility of JetBlue pursuing a deal with other carriers such as American Airlines, United, or even Alaska Airlines. Any such partnership could provide a financial lifeline to JetBlue, which has struggled to turn a profit since 2019.
JetBlue’s efforts to expand through partnerships have faced significant regulatory challenges. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice successfully dismantled its Northeast Alliance with American Airlines, citing antitrust concerns. More recently, JetBlue abandoned its planned merger with Spirit Airlines in March 2024 after a judge ruled against the deal in yet another DOJ lawsuit.
Under its new leadership, with Geraghty taking over as CEO in February 2024, JetBlue has highlighted positive momentum and improving corporate travel revenues. However, financial troubles persist—the airline reported a net loss of $44 million in Q4 2024 and a full-year net loss of $795 million, more than double its $310 million loss in 2023.
While United has made its stance clear, the conversation around JetBlue’s next move—and whether it will secure a new partner—shows no signs of slowing down.
