Icelandair has selected Amadeus Altea NDC as the carrier’s New Distribution Capability API provider, Amadeus announced Wednesday, expanding the companies’ relationship and enabling the distribution of the full range of the airline’s content and fares, including web fares and NDC-based content, to Amadeus-connected agents. Implementation is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2025, according to the technology company.

NDC, a program developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is designed to revolutionize how airlines distribute their products by enabling richer, more dynamic, and personalized content. The technology allows carriers to move beyond the limitations of traditional distribution channels, offering tailored fare bundles, ancillary products, and real-time updates directly to travel agents and other intermediaries.

Amadeus Altea NDC is one of the leading platforms for implementing this standard, providing robust APIs that connect airlines with a global network of travel sellers. By adopting this platform, Icelandair aims to deliver more value to its customers while improving operational efficiency.

Benefits for Icelandair and Its Customers

By integrating Amadeus Altea NDC, Icelandair will unlock several key advantages:

  1. Enhanced Product Offering: The NDC platform enables Icelandair to showcase richer and more customized content, including bundled fare options, seat upgrades, and ancillary services like extra baggage or priority boarding.
  2. Real-Time Updates: The API provides real-time availability and pricing, allowing travel agents and other distribution partners to offer the latest deals to customers.
  3. Improved Customer Experience: Through NDC, Icelandair can offer a more seamless and personalized booking process, improving customer satisfaction.
  4. Broader Distribution Reach: Partnering with Amadeus Altea NDC opens up Icelandair’s offerings to a vast network of travel agencies and online travel platforms, increasing its global visibility.
  5. Cost Efficiency: By simplifying distribution processes and reducing dependency on traditional Global Distribution Systems (GDS), Icelandair can potentially lower its distribution costs while maintaining high-quality service.

Aligning with Icelandair’s Vision

This strategic move aligns with Icelandair’s broader goal of staying competitive in an increasingly digital and customer-centric travel industry. With Amadeus Altea NDC, the carrier is positioning itself to meet evolving customer expectations for personalized and transparent booking options.

The adoption of NDC technology by Icelandair reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry. More airlines are moving toward modern distribution capabilities to offer travelers greater flexibility and transparency in their booking choices. Icelandair’s decision to partner with Amadeus Altea NDC, a globally recognized leader in this space, reinforces the importance of collaboration with technology providers to meet these new demands.

As the integration with Amadeus Altea NDC progresses, Icelandair is expected to roll out enhanced features for both travel agents and customers in the coming months. This move is likely to strengthen the airline’s position in its core markets while providing a foundation for continued innovation in its distribution strategy.

By adopting Amadeus Altea NDC, Icelandair not only modernizes its operations but also reaffirms its commitment to providing superior service and meeting the needs of an ever-changing travel landscape.
