Jetstar’s first ever flight between Sydney and Hamilton took off today, marking an exciting week of new trans-Tasman route launches.

JQ165 will land in Hamilton just after 11am this morning, marking a historic moment as the first scheduled international flight coming into Hamilton in over 13 years.

With four weekly flights, the new route will add nearly 75,000 low fare seats each year across the Tasman, expanding access and offering more options for travellers between Australia and New Zealand.

Jetstar’s new trans-Tasman route launches continue throughout June, with Hamilton to Gold Coast launching Wednesday, followed by direct Dunedin to Gold Coast flights next week.

Earlier in April, Jetstar also commenced Christchurch – Cairns flights, further strengthening the links between Australia and New Zealand.

Operating aircraft
Flights between Sydney and Hamilton will be operated using a mix of Airbus A320ceo and A320neo aircraft.

The A320neo is the newest in Jetstar’s fleet. The aircraft are providing customers with a new level of low-cost comfort, with quieter and more fuel-efficient engines producing lower emissions, 40 per cent larger overhead storage bins, in-seat power sockets, seat back device holders and modern ergonomic seating.

Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Tully said it was exciting to be further expanding Jetstar’s New Zealand network.

“This year, we’re celebrating 20 years of international flying from New Zealand and 16 years of domestic operations – transforming the country’s aviation industry along the way.

“We’re excited to bring international travel back to Hamilton with new direct flights from Sydney and the Gold Coast, offering more low-cost options and exciting new destinations for Kiwi’s and Aussies.

“We know Kiwi travelers love our low fares and see huge potential for even more growth in the future.”

Hamilton Airport Chief Executive Mark Morgan said it was a “momentous day” for his team and hundreds of others who had worked tirelessly to tick every single box required to stand up an international airport.

“This is hugely exciting for Hamilton, for the wider region and beyond. For Australians, there is a new international gateway directly into heartland New Zealand. And here at home, it means Kiwis have another way to cross the Tasman that’s super-easy and affordable. Bring it on!”
