Verra Mobility Corporation, a global leader in smart mobility and tolling technologies, has announced a new partnership with Sixt, one of Europe’s top mobility service providers, to introduce electronic toll payment solutions for rental vehicles in Italy. This initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing the travel experience for both domestic and international renters navigating Italy’s vast motorway system.

Hassle-Free Tolling Now Available in Key Italian Cities

The new solution, now available in six major Italian citiesMilan, Rome, Florence, Venice, Bergamo, and Bologna—allows Sixt rental customers to opt-in for automated toll payments at the time of booking or pickup. With this feature, renters can bypass toll booths entirely, eliminating the need to carry cash or wait in long lines, particularly during the busy travel months.

“This partnership simplifies tolling for visitors and locals alike,” said Tsjerk-Friso Roelfzema, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Verra Mobility Europe. “We’re proud to expand our network in collaboration with a premium brand like Sixt, bringing fast, secure, and stress-free tolling to the forefront of the rental experience in Italy.”

A Timely Solution for Italy’s Busy Toll Roads

Italy’s motorway network spans over 4,500 kilometers, supporting heavy seasonal traffic and accommodating over 65 million international tourists in 2024 alone. On average, 137,000 short-term rental vehicles traverse Italian toll roads each year, peaking at 164,000 vehicles during holidays and high tourism periods.

By integrating Verra Mobility’s electronic tolling solution, renters can now utilize dedicated “fast lanes” for an uninterrupted driving experience. The technology is already fully enabled across 100% of Italy’s tolling infrastructure, ensuring nationwide coverage for Sixt customers.

Building on a Strong Foundation

This partnership follows Verra Mobility’s 2023 alliance with Telepass, Italy’s premier provider of mobility and tolling solutions, which expanded the reach of Verra’s toll platform to several major rental brands. The system is also widely adopted in the U.S., Spain, and Ireland, offering millions of drivers across Europe and North America a more streamlined tolling experience.

“Sixt is committed to offering innovative, customer-focused mobility services,” said Angelo Ghigliano, Vice President at Sixt. “We immediately saw the value of Verra Mobility’s technology, and we’re excited to roll it out across Italy to further simplify the rental journey for our customers.”

Global Reach with Proven Technology

Verra Mobility processes more than 300 million toll transactions annually across a global fleet exceeding seven million vehicles. Its proprietary toll management platform matches toll usage to individual vehicles and drivers, ensuring accurate, transparent, and secure billing either directly to customers or via rental partners.

The system helps rental operators reduce administrative burdens and provides travelers with a smoother, stress-free experience, particularly in countries with complex toll systems like Italy.
