Scoot, the budget airline arm of Singapore Airlines, has observed a rising preference for solo travel among Singaporeans through its recent study carried out in collaboration with YouGov.
The survey, titled Unpacking the Solo Travel Trend, gathered insights from 5,000 participants across five Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries, shedding light on the perspectives and motivations of today’s independent travelers.
What was once considered a niche activity has steadily become a mainstream travel choice for Singaporeans, particularly among younger generations. The findings show that nearly eight in ten Singapore respondents (79%) went on multiple solo trips within the last year. Among them, nearly half (49%) took three or more such journeys in the same period. Millennials are leading this shift, making up 51% of current and aspiring solo travelers from Singapore — a significantly higher share compared to the APAC average of 40%.
Solo travel also comes highly endorsed by those who have experienced it. In Singapore, a remarkable 85% of respondents said they would recommend traveling alone to others. The appeal is rooted in several motivations: 55% cited the freedom and flexibility to design their own itineraries as the top reason, while 52% viewed solo trips as a valuable opportunity to rest and focus on personal well-being. Additionally, 46% appreciated the independence of discovering new destinations at their own pace.
Beyond leisure, solo travel has been increasingly linked to deeper personal benefits. Almost half of the Singaporean respondents (45%) regarded it as a pathway to personal growth and self-discovery — outpacing the regional average of 40%.
Scoot emphasized that these insights reflect a broader societal trend, where mindfulness, wellness, and self-reflection have become central to lifestyle choices in recent years. The report highlights how travel, and particularly solo journeys, has transformed from a recreational pursuit into a meaningful experience for introspection and self-improvement.
Commenting on the findings, Agatha Yap, Scoot’s Director of Marketing Communications & Loyalty, said: “While this doesn’t signal the decline of group or family vacations, the way people travel today increasingly mirrors their individuality and desire for self-discovery. Scoot’s white paper offers valuable insights into the behavior, motivations, and expectations of this growing segment of travelers.”

The survey findings show that solo travellers tend to be highly deliberate and well-prepared when planning their journeys. Nearly all respondents (98%) indicated that they undertake some form of trip planning. Beyond booking flights, the leading considerations include choosing suitable accommodation (57%), ensuring personal safety (51%), and managing budgets effectively (42%). To make well-informed decisions, travellers frequently consult online review platforms, hotel websites, and digital travel agencies for guidance on both flights and lodging.
The white paper also highlights a strong preference for Asia-Pacific (APAC) destinations among Singapore-based respondents, with nine out of ten planning regional trips within the next 12 months. The top three destinations identified for the year ahead are Japan (25%), China (22%), and Malaysia (22%).
